The call always found the same groove. Something about the job, something about the flat, something about whether I had thought about what I was going to do, and then thirty minutes of me building a case — evidence, mitigation, a plan with dates in it — for a tribunal that had not actually convened and would not be delivering a verdict.

I got off the phone exhausted every time, and for about fifteen years I diagnosed that as her fault, which was satisfying and got me precisely nowhere.

The thing I had wrong

I was treating every question as a request for information. Almost none of them were. They were a form of contact — anxious, habitual, occasionally controlling, but fundamentally an attempt to establish that I was still reachable and that she still had standing in my life.

Answering them as though they were requests for information meant supplying material. And material generates follow-up questions, which generate more material, and within ten minutes I was defending a decision I had made confidently eighteen months earlier and had not thought about since.

Nobody was extracting this from me. I was volunteering it, at speed, because I had learned somewhere around the age of eleven that the way to end the conversation was to win it.

What I replaced it with

Not boundaries, in the sense the word has acquired — no announcement, no framework, no conversation about how we communicate, which in my family would have been treated as a declaration of war and would have generated three years of material on its own.

I just stopped supplying evidence. She asked whether I had thought about what I was going to do. I said yes. Not yes and here is the reasoning. Yes.

It is a much stranger thing to do than it sounds. The pause afterwards was excruciating for about four calls. I had to sit through it with my jaw shut, aware that I was being rude by a standard neither of us had ever written down but both of us knew.

What happened

The calls got shorter. Then, after a couple of months, they got better, which I had not anticipated and which is the actual point of writing this down.

Because when the audit had nothing to run on, something else had to fill twenty minutes, and what filled it was her. What she had been doing. A row with a neighbour about a hedge. A thing she was worried about that had nothing to do with me. A funny story about a man at the garden centre, told properly, with timing, which I had not heard her do in years because there had never been room.

It turns out I had been taking up the entire call. Not her. Me, defending myself, at length, for a decade and a half.

What it is not

It is not a technique for handling a parent who is cruel. That is a different situation with different options, and anyone in it has usually worked out their own arrangements without help from an essay.

It is also not distance. I speak to my mother more often now than I did when every call was a hearing, for the obvious reason that it costs less to pick up.

The part I did not expect

I started noticing how often I did it everywhere else. Explaining a reasonable decision to a colleague who had asked a neutral question. Justifying a Saturday to a friend. Providing a rationale for an ordinary preference to someone who had merely been making conversation.

Yes is a complete sentence and I did not believe it until I had watched it work about forty times. There is a specific quiet that follows it — the sound of a conversation having to become about something real, because the usual fuel has run out.

That quiet is uncomfortable for approximately four seconds. Everything good in this comes after it.
